But when they first made me a columnist, the editors of the Dallas Times Herald also wanted to make sure I understood that, as a columnist, I was expected to be a local celebrity.
One was expected to take part in local celebrity events whenever invited. One of the editors briefing me on my new role wanted to be sure I understood that most local celebrity events took place in the evening or even on weekends, outside normal working hours. While he explained this to me once or twice to be sure I was listening, the other editor waited. Then the other editor delivered the punch-line, the crucial information: even though taking part in local celebrity events was considered to be a necessary and important part of my job as a local columnist, I would not be paid extra for it.
In my youthful cynicism, I may have assumed the lack of overtime pay was the real point of the whole stupid conversation. I was so thrilled with my new job that I would gladly have agreed to light janitorial duties in order to keep it. He aimed to be the next Doc Greene, a city columnist at the Detroit News. Making a movie with your rich friends is just courting disaster. In real life, she plotted to throw Keith Rhodus out of her business partnership. There was a time, before the lawsuits, the criminal complaints and the machinations of a has-been actress, when the Saabs and the Rhoduses were friends, although what they had in common besides Park Cities addresses is a mystery. Tom and Debbie Rhodus are both attorneys, nearly as intelligent as they are genteel.
Even when they swear, and the drama in their lives lately gives them plenty of reason, they sound as solemn and sober as a commencement speaker at Harvard. The Saabs came to Dallas after a floundering real estate venture led to an ugly bankruptcy in New Orleans in which a federal judge criticized them for making misleading financial statements.

We’d watched with curiosity as the building at Oak Lawn Ave. Although the blue neon sign out front and the server’s T-shirts read “Campuzano Mexican Food” even our server was quick to admit that the food was definitely Tex-Mex. And it’s one thing to win “Best Salsa and Chips,” “Best Margarita” and “Best Mexican Restaurant” in places like Waxahachie, Cedar Hill and Midlothian, where Campuzano’s three other locations serve up the same menu, but when you open a Tex-Mex place this close to so many other established restaurants that plate up similar fare — from Mia’s to Herrera’s to Avila’s — then you have to do something to set yourself apart, right?
Like, say, a decidedly non-Tejano dance-heavy, Top 40 soundtrack and free Wi-Fi with builtin iPhone chargers in nearly every booth, which one Yelper already described as looking “like giant spiders. And then, even before we were seated, we noticed the colorful phone chargers. They are impossible to miss. The group to our right was already plugged-in, and once we were seated we immediately overheard the young woman to our left who couldn’t contain her surprise.
While diners look over the menu three complimentary salsas are delivered to the table — a fiery, smoky “Diablo” salsa, a salsa verde which our server described as an avocado and pesto sauce and a traditional red salsa. We liked all three, but the Diablo one was the most memorable.

Luckily for us, the Dallas Observer keeps us and our bellies satisfied with their fun foodie events. Each event is an opportunity to try dishes from multiple restaurants at once. Basically the Morning After is the ultimate brunch experience!
Dallas Observer city columnist Jim Schutze left the publication after 22 years. Schutze came to Dallas to work at the Dallas Times Herald in the ’80s before.
In , Schutze would release the true crime book Bully: A True Story Of High School Revenge , which would later be turned into a film , and join the staff of the Observer as its city columnist. In that role, he developed a reputation as a dogged reporter with an enviable Rolodex, and cultivated a caricature as a grouchy, call-it-like-it-is amplifier for the working man against the city establishment. During our time working together, Schutze was always an inspiration in terms of both his work ethic and the respect with which he was treated throughout the city.
The words of encouragement he would additionally offer at my attempts made to buck the system and do the unexpected are a large part of why I set out on the path to one day launch Central Track. It is not yet entirely certain why Schutze is out at the Observer. Update at p. Remember Me. Lost your password? Music Music See all. August 20, August 14, August 13,
